"Vitamin D is essential for maintaining healthy bones and general bone density of women with lower breast cancer as a side effect of hormone therapy and chemotherapy," said luke Peppone, assistant professor of radiation oncology at the University of Rochester Medical Center.
Peppone and his team studied 166 women undergoing breast cancer treatment therapies. The researchers found that nearly 70 percent of patients had vitamin D levels are low in the blood. Levels of vitamin D research respondents an average of 27 nanograms per milliliter of blood. Based on the U.S. Institute of Medicine, a sufficient level is 32 nanograms per milliliter.
Therefore, the researchers suggested that the patients taking vitamin D supplements to increase the high-dose vitamin D. In addition to bone health, vitamin D also plays a vital role in cell growth and keep the immune system remains strong.
